The Historical Romance Book Genre

Historical romances are a type of historical novel that takes place in the past. They may contain several plot lines, but the main plot usually follows the romance of the hero and heroine. The setting might be based upon fictionalized accounts of real events. While the authors of some historical romance books allow themselves quite a bit of poetic license, others base their stories upon an extensive study of past times, events, and location.

What to Expect Out of Historical Romance

Some of the most popular times and places for the setting of these novels include prehistory, ancient times, Medieval times, and of course, Elizabethan, Recency, and Victorian England. Certainly, several different time period of American history are also popular, including Revolutionary and Colonial America, the Civil War, and the Old West. Naturally, this genre also covers the early to middle part of the 20th Century.

In other words, it’s possible to find prehistoric people, ancient people, knights, royalty, cowboys, pirates, Vikings, and business barons in these books. Sometimes there are even Native Americans and homesteaders. Very often, the characters are more ordinary types of folks, but they must rise above their circumstances.

While there isn’t just one formula for this type of romantic novel, they often do follow a pattern. There is usually a powerful hero and a strong-minded heroine. They must overcome some obstacles in order to find that they both really like each other. In the end, this relationship might end in a passionate affair or even a marriage.
